Ski X Fashion: A Snow Day
by Maryn McNeely
Winter in Boston…winter IN Boston…winter in BOSTON. Winter in Boston is a choice–sometimes it’s hard to tell if it is the right choice–but Percolate x Ski Fashion makes it feel like the right choice.
After successfully manifesting a snow day and getting over 20 inches of snow, Percolate took to the slopes…the slopes of the famed “Prez Lawn” located on the beautiful Tufts campus in the hills of Medford/Somerville, MA, as the next up-and-coming soon-to-be Olympic skier (Alex “Stewie” Stewart) did what he loves most: extreme sports.
Seeing these photos should remind you why sleeping with your pajamas inside out and backwards and putting a spoon under your pillow (two common rituals that significantly increase the likelihood of no school because of snow #snowday) is what must be done when a snowstorm is brewing.
Taking inspiration from the “V Capsule by VONN” collection that blends luxury ski fashion and contemporary design, Percolate uses these ideas and expands on them, adding personality through vibrant colors, action shots, and iconic accessories. The V Capsule collection took place as Lindsey Vonn made her ski racing comeback after a partial knee replacement, representing what it means to dream big, fiercely putting it all on the line. In promoting V Capsule, she can be seen strutting through snow atop Mont Blanc, looking unstoppable.
Like Vonn, Stewie looks unstoppable here, too! Maybe it’s because he is fitted up in snow gear, sunglasses, and a funky necklace…or maybe it’s just because he’s mid-flight. Who’s to say?
The vibe of it all almost makes you forget it felt like negative three degrees Fahrenheit. Which is a huge win! It’s important during cold winter months like these not to get bogged down by the early sunsets and below-zero wind chill blues. There’s a book out there called How to Winter! Harness Your Mindset to Thrive on Cold, Dark, or Difficult Days, written by Kari Leibowitz, addresses this exact point. Leibowitz is a psychologist and spent a year in Tromsø, Norway, a place so far north that the sun does not even rise from November to January. She researched concrete strategies to make surviving winter easier. The main advice she has includes the following: appreciate winter, make winter special, and get outside.
Dare I say, Percolate x Ski Fashion accomplishes all three. Let’s talk about it.
Winter is appreciated! Because of the wintry storm, Stewie’s red and blue coat, along with his yellow bottomed skis, come to life thanks to the background of white sparkling snow. Re-framing is a powerful tool, and as they say, the lighting is always at its best when it’s overcast. #gratitude
Winter is made special! Sledding, skiing, snowball fights. They only happen under perfect conditions, and how special is that?! Stewie skiing off homemade jumps, while wearing iconic sunglasses that remind me of Star Trek, and a beautiful necklace that has probably never seen snow before. #onceinalifetime
And, last but not least, people (and the fancy necklace) are getting outside, unfearingly. These things are important. And inspiring! #coldisjustamindset
Surviving winter in Boston is not for the weak. So get yourself a brightly colored coat, perhaps a pair of yellow shoes. And maybe, just maybe, you should start strutting through the snow just like those who came before you. It looks pretty fun if you ask me…
